In 2018, Democrats flipped seven Republican Governorships including Wisconsin and Michigan. Now, those states are holding governor elections and the landscape is different for Democrats.

10. Georgia

GOP Incumbent Brian Kemp who won as a Trump loyalist in 2018 has announced his re-election and faces former Senator David Perdue in the Republican primary.

Stacey Abrams, the former minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives and founder of Fair Fight Action has announced that she will run again after losing to Kemp in 2018.

9.Arizona 

GOP incumbent Doug Ducey was first elected in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. He will be term-limited and cannot seek a 3rd term. Kari Lake, a former TV News Host is running in the crowded Republican primary with Matt Salmon and Steve Gaynor.

In the Democratic primary, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs is running against former US Chief of Staff to the CBP Marco Lopez Jr and former State Representative Aaron Lieberman.

8.Wisconsin 

Democratic Incumbent Tony Evers is running for re-election in 2022. He was first elected in 2018 after defeating Republican Incumbent Scott Walker. He faces a primary challenge from Former Sheboygan alderman Job Edmond Hou-Seye. 

In the Republican primary, former Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch is running against businessman Tim Michels and Assemblyman for Wisconsin’s 59th State Assembly District Timothy Ramthun.

7.Michigan

Democratic incumbent Gretchen Whitmer is running for re-election in 2022. She was first elected in 2018. She is unopposed in the Democratic primary and was declared the presumptive nominee for the Democrats.

In the Republican primary, former Police Chief of Detroit Police, James Craig is the early frontrunner and he faces challenges from Conservative media commentator Tudor Dixon. 

6.Nevada

Democratic Incumbent Steve Sisolak is running for re-election in 2022. He was first elected in 2018 and is facing a Challenge from former Clark County Commissioner and former State Assembly for the State’s 1st District, Tom Collins.

In the Republican primary, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo faces former Senator Dean Heller who lost re-election in 2018 to Jacky Rosen.

5.Maryland

GOP Incumbent Larry Hogan was first elected in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 will be term-limited and cannot seek a 3rd term. Kelly Schulz the state’s Secretary of Commerce is running in the Republican primary and is being challenged by State Lawmaker Daniel Cox.

In the Democratic primary, State Comptroller Peter Franchot and former Chair of the Democrat Party Tom Perez along with Attorney General Doug Gansler, former US Education Secretary John King, and former Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker.

4.Kansas

Democratic Incumbent Laura Kelly is running for re-election in 2022. She was First elected in 2018. She is unopposed in the Democratic Primary.

Attorney General Derek Schmidt is unopposed in the Republican primary after former Governor Jeff Coyler and Businessman Chase LaPorte withdrew from the race.

3.Pennsylvania

Democratic Incumbent Tom Wolf was first elected in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018 will be term-limited and cannot seek a 3rd term. Attorney General Josh Shapiro is running in the Democratic Primary and is unopposed since his challenger failed to qualify for ballot access.

In the Republican Primary US Representative Lou Barletta is running against his challengers Pennsylvania Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman and State Senator Doug Mastriano.

2.Florida

GOP Incumbent Ron DeSantis is running for re-election in 2022. He was first elected in 2018. He faces challengers in the Republican Primary from RNC Official John Joseph Mercadante.

In the Democratic Primary, US Representative and Former Governor Charlie Crist is running against Agricultural Commissioner Nikki Fried and State Senator Annette Taddeo.

1.Maine

Democratic incumbent Janet Mills is running for re-election in 2022. She was first Elected in 2018. She is the presumptive nominee for the Democrats after her challenger John Glowa failed to qualify for ballot access.

In the Republican primary, former Governor Paul LePage is running for his 1st non-consecutive term. He is unopposed after his challenger Michael Heath failed to qualify for ballot access.

Honorable Mentions

Ohio and Texas

Both these states are likely to favor their Incumbents. Ohio is likely to favor incumbent Mike DeWine and Texas is likely to favor incumbent Greg Abbott. Both are public officials who are popular in their party.
